Consensus Now Says Human Influence on Climate Warming Is ‘Established Fact’
August 9, 2021–In a massive 3949-page report, a United Nations working group warns that the climate is warming and humans influence is a cause. The report covers every area of the world. It discusses both the cause and effect. Most notably, it warns that even under the best-case scenario, scientists predict the Earth will warm by 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2040.
“It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land,” the report said.
“Widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and biosphere have occurred.”
It is the sixth of eight reports by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The report comes in advance of the UN Climate Change Conference in November. According to Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, so far 110 of the 191 countries participating in the conference have submitted their plans for reducing national emissions.
Greenhouses Gases
The report asserted that it is “very likely” a mixture of greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) — was the main driver of tropospheric warming since 1979.
The Oceans & The Arctic
One of the most notable changes is taking place in the Arctic, where the sea ice is decreasing. On the opposite end of the Earth, the Antarctic has not experienced a notably trend since 1979 due to “regionally opposing trends and large internal variability,” the report said.
The Arctic Ocean is also experiencing the “largest changes in the frequency of marine heatwaves.” Meanwhile, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean are warming more slowly or have slightly cooled than the global average. In contrast, the Indian Ocean is warming faster.
Cities Are Hotter
Urban areas are generally hotter than rural ones. According to the report, that’s due to:
- The geometry of having tall buildings close to each other, blocking wind.
- Heat from domestic and industrial heating and cooling systems.
- Construction materials that retain and re-emit heat.
