November 2, 2022—As the new owner and head of the world’s social media gathering place, Elon Musk has a plan to make it a little less free. That is, he intends to charge $8 a month to Twitter users who want validation backing their accounts that they are legitimate.
The validation would come from a blue check mark next to their names and handle. Moreover, that check mark could come with the privileges, such as priority in receiving replies, mentions, and search rankings, the ability to post long videos and audio, and half as many ads.
Revenue the company receives from charging the fee could help Twitter reward the content creators, Musk said. Here he is discussing his vision in an archived video released today. Are you buying in?

Reward The Creator
Musk makes a point worth considering. First, not everyone would have to pay, just everyone who wants credibility. But if Twitter truly requires validation with the payment, then that alone would bring credibility to the platform. It also might clean up the abundance of information that’s out there and reward creators.
In today’s media-frenzied world too many media outlets use a follow-the-pack kind of journalism that copies and pastes what others’ created. Perhaps they add a new spin without value. That style can simply make information messier. What he says here in this archived video is that he wants to reward the one who showed up and got the story.
It’s too soon to say how it’ll all work out. The devil is in the details. But this the same guy who created Tesla and Starlink.
