Resolution Calls On Russia To Immediately Cease Its Use Of Force Against Ukraine
March 2, 2022–In an extraordinary session of the United Nation’s General Assembly, representatives from 141 countries voted to condemn Russia’s military assault on Ukraine, uphold the UN charter and call for an immediate end to the bloodshed. It was only the 11th time in the organization’s history that the General Assembly held an emergency session.
The four-page resolution recalls several previous resolutions supporting territorial integrity and national sovereignty. Furthermore, it minces no words about condemning Russia.
Belarus Condemned Too
The resolution also calls out Russia’s ally Belarus. Specifically, it “deplores the involvement of Belarus in this unlawful use of force against Ukraine, and calls upon it to abide by its international obligations.”
Roadmap to Russia’s Foreign Relations
The vote on the resolution reads like a roadmap into Russia’s foreign relations. Only four countries, Syria, Eritrea, Belarus and North Korea, joined Russia in opposing the resolution. India again abstained from the vote. This time its arch rival Pakistan was there to join the abstention. The one moment of unity hints how Russia is playing both countries, selling heavy weapons to both. Meanwhile, however, the UAE took a stand. The country abstained during the Security Council’s consideration of the resolution.
It was a moment for the history books when the vote happened during the extraordinary session.
