Dismissing Concerns About Treatment of Muslim Uighurs
Human rights groups and leaders in Western governments accuse China of committing “crimes against humanity.” Its government’s treatment of its Muslim Uighur ethnic minority in Xinjiang is drawing widespread international attention. But Khan said he does not believe reports by Western media and governments. Rather, the leader of the Muslim world’s second-most populated country said he believes China’s explanations of its relations with the Uighurs.
“Because we have our very strong relationship with China, and because we have a relationship based on trust, so we actually accept the Chinese version. What they say about their programs in Xinjiang, we accept it,” Khan said during a press conference in Pakistan.
One-Party Rule
As far as governance, Khan told the journalists that China’s one-party rule offers more flexibility than a democratic, popular-election model advocated by the West. He said democracy, “straight-jackets” leaders while the CPC’s model has outperformed Western democracies.
Economic Partnership
Pakistan and China share a border and are forming friendly relations. In fact, China is investing billions of dollars in Pakistan through an infrastructure project. Since 2013, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor initiative, which is partially debt-financed, has poured over $600 billion into Pakistan.
In addition to sharing a border, China and Pakistan also border India, with which they each have faced in military conflicts dating back decades.
