The communication channels follow a series of diplomatic meetings between the two countries, the largest economies in the world. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo is likely to lead both working groups for the United States. For China, the talks will take place at the vice minister level.

Big Banks See Slower Growth In China

September 13, 2023— China is estimating its economic growth to average 5 percent this year. However, even that modest forecast might be rosy. Six international banks, including JP Morgan, Barclays, and UBS, have downgraded their economic forecasts for China in light of the country's falling exports and persistent problems in the real estate sector, according to reporting by the South China Morning Post. Estimates for annual GDP from financial institutions range from 4.2 percent to 4.8 percent. SCMP's Ralph Jennings suggests China's economic problems could have global ripple effects for businesses, particularly for developing countries that rely on trade with China. The news comes at a time when economists are warning about stability in the global economy.

In Communist China, Xi Is Completely And Unquestionably In Charge

Xi's in charge. Communism vs. Democracy: Why It Matter November 7, 2022—If you want to know what communism looks like, you don't need to spend time in China, Cuba, Laos, or Vietnam. You don't even need to spend hours watching the National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, the twice-a-decade gathering that selects the country's highest rulers. All you need to see is one minute of the final ceremony right before officials announce the new leaders. It was at that moment that party members came for former President Hu Jintao. Note, the 79-year-old Hu served as China's president from 2003 to 2013. As a leader, he served during unprecedented growth that cemented China's status as a world power. But that record didn't secure him much dignity to let him stay seated during the anno...

What Happens When China Buys Up Europe’s Ports?

China's Xi Jinping has a stake in developing relations with Greece and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Photo: Li Xueren/Xinhua China's State-Owned Cosco To Buy Stake In Another European Port November 2, 2022—Greece may be a pioneer and champion of democracy, but in the business of trade it owes a great deal to communist China. In fact, its largest port, Piraeus, is owned by a Chinese state-owned shipping company called Cosco Shipping. That's the subject of a fine piece of reporting by Kaki Bali for Germany's DW, called "In Greece's Largest Port of Piraeus, China Is The Boss." Bali looks at the implications on trade and geopolitics as China's Cosco buys up ports in Greece, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and Brussels. Noting the modernization of the port and jobs, ...

Hundreds Of NGOs Pressure Olympics Sponsors For Action

Photo by Chinese-Australian Artist Badiucao for the Human Rights Watch February 8, 2022—As Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 commenced on February 4 in China, more than 240 non-governmental organizations from around the world joined hands to demand answers from the corporate sponsors of the games. "It’s not possible for the Olympic Games to be a ‘force for good,’ as the International Olympic Committee claims, while the host government is committing grave crimes in violation of international law," said Sophie Richardson, a director at Human Rights Watch, in a news release. According to the HRW, human rights advocates have documented scores of abuses by China since the Olympic committee selected Beijing for the 2022 Winter Games. These include: Arbitrary detention, torture, and forced...

Competition With China Surpasses US-Soviet Cold War Rivalry, CIA Director Says

October 21, 2021—Unlike the competition with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the U.S. competition with China today "spans virtually every domain there is," CIA Director William Burns said on Wednesday. It is not just in a military sphere where the two largest economies compete, it is in the technological, social and political spaces as well. And as that competition mounts, the agency is preparing to track it with a division devoted to China. Burns spoke with students and faculty at an in-person event held by Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. The center also streamed the event. A Multi-Power World The challenge of gathering intelligence today, Burns said, is that now "power is diffuse" with non-state actors like technology companies and...

China Issues Paper On Human Rights, Xinjiang

July 14, 2021--A day after the U.S. government warned against doing business in Xinjiang, China issued a White Paper today defending its human rights record and asserting that the elimination of poverty supports equal rights. Fighting Poverty And Terrorism "Poverty is a major problem that plagues humanity, and poverty eradication is the most arduous global human rights cause in the contemporary era," the white paper said. It reported that "From 1955 to 2020, Xinjiang’s GDP rose from RMB1.2 billion in 1955 to RMB1.4 trillion in 2020. On a per capita GDP basis, that is RMB241 in 1955 to RMB53,593 in 2020. According to the paper, extremists and terrorists from East Turkistan have incited hatred, discrimination, and violence inside Xinjiang, "taking advantage of people's ethnic and r...

China: National Security Law Brought Hong Kong ‘On Track’

June 30, 2021-China's Foreign Minister Wang Wenbin said China's National Security Law brought Hong Kong "back to the right track." Asked about allegations of human rights issues during a press conference today, Wang said Hong Kong is back on track and "the rule of law and justice have been upheld." Hong Kong Source: Mohr Media, file photo "This is an undeniable fact that any unbiased people would recognize," Wang said. Moreover, he cited economic statistics to back up his assertion that the world supports China's rule over Hong Kong. China's Crack Down on Freedoms As the GER has previously reported, Hong Kong has cracked down on speech since the new National Security Law and the election law have taken effect. China, meanwhile, credits the National Security Law for making...

Free Press Dies in Hong Kong As China Freezes Paper’s Assets

June 22, 2021--The writing may have already been on the wall for the forced closure of the Apple Daily paper when China passed its security law. But the news yesterday that China's strong-arm control of Hong Kong would force the pro-democracy tabloid to shut down still stung like an unexpected bite. In the past week, Hong Kong authorities froze the paper's financial assets, arrested two of the paper's senior executives and raided the paper's offices. Unable to pay staff or operations, the paper is expected to close within days. The forced closure of the paper made headline news around the world on Monday. And in Hong Kong, it represents "the biggest sledgehammer blow to Hong Kong's fast-vanishing civil liberties" since the handover to China in 1997, an editorial in the Apple Daily sa...
