Diplomacy

The GER covers diplomacy, international organizations, and meetings. Looking beyond our individual political systems we find people and organizations working to make life better for people in both conflict-ridden places as well as secure, developed countries. It is not enough to focus on the end results of international relations. It’s worth focusing on the day-to-day work of diplomacy. Often, that’s where breakthroughs occur.

Latin American Politics Reshuffles After Russia Starts War In Europe

April 5, 2022—It's still surprising how much of a wrench Russia threw into world politics when its leader in the Kremlin decided to invade Ukraine. While the effects in Europe, China, and the United States are front-page news on a daily basis, it seems like people are ignoring just how much the political game changed in Latin America. For one, it changed how we perceive certain governments in terms of their alignment. Chile's Gabriel Boric and Colombia's Iván Duque clearly condemned the Russian invasion of a free state. They also voted with 139 other countries to condemn Russia's aggressive actions. Argentina also voted with the majority of the world's countries. However, Argentina's Vicente Fernández defended Putin's invasion side-by-side with Brazil's Bolsonaro. Interestingly, jus...

In Contrast To NATO, Moscow-Based CSTO Is Silent On Ukraine

File photo: CSTO meeting 2020 March 24, 2022--The Russia-dominated military alliance known as the Collective Security Treaty Organization is keeping silent on the Ukraine crisis, including Russia's invasion and the humanitarian outflow of refugees. That stands in contrast to the 30 member NATO alliance, which issued a statement today in reaction to Russia's war in Ukraine. March Meeting on Crisis Response Meeting this month virtually, the Moscow-based CSTO staff discussed crisis-response initiatives with military representatives from its member states. Members include Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. According to a March 24 news statement about the meeting, the representatives discussed the "military and political situation in the world and ...

Council Of Europe Moves Forward Minus One: Russia

March 16, 2022--The human rights body for the European continent made a big decision today: It kicked one of its 46 members out. It is another sign of the turning point in history when the world becomes more divided. In what it said was "an extraordinary meeting" in Strasbourg, the Council of Europe revoked the membership of the Russian Federation after 26 years of its participation. Human Rights Body Statement The expulsion comes a day after the council's parliamentary assembly initiated the procedure. "Through their actions in Ukraine the Russian authorities deprive the Russian people of the benefit of the most advanced human rights protection system in the world, including the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights and our vast convention system," the council's l...

UN Security Council Discusses Chemical Weapons

Hearing Comes A Day After Council Examines Syria's Chemical Weapons March 11, 2022--With the sheer amount of devastation Ukraine is undergoing under the hand of the Russian military, it's hard to imagine it may get worse. But the possibility of more terror arose this week at the mention of chemical weapons. Today, the UN Security Council met at Russia's request after Russian diplomats accused Ukraine of having bio-labs in the country. It also came a day after the council heard remarks from a UN representative about Syria's chemical weapons program. Wild Accusations By Russia Pose Concerns For U.S., Ukraine Specifically, Russian diplomats asserted that Ukraine is producing bioweapons with the support of the United States. Biden Takes More Economic Actions Against Russia

De-Globalization Continues As Congress Targets Most-Favored Trade Status March 11, 2022—U.S. President Joe Biden announced additional economic and trade measures today that further divide U.S.-Russian business relations. Specifically, Biden said he is working with Congress to deny Russia its most-favored-nation trade status, which gives its goods preferential treatment. Congressional Trade Bills Hill lawmakers have introduced bills in the House and Senate, H.R. 6835, S. 3717 and S. 3722, to withdraw the Permanent Normal Trade Relations with Russia. It's fair to say the bills have bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, a high-ranking member of the tax committee, is the lead sponsor of one of the bills. "Russia must be denied the benefit of the ...

Russia, Ukraine Foreign Ministers Talk In Turkey

March 10, 2022--It was a valiant effort by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an to host diplomatic talks between Russia and Ukraine today. After all, it's the 15th day of Russia's brutal war against Ukraine and its citizens with no end in sight. The table was already set for meetings as Turkey was hosting a diplomacy forum in Antalya. So the mood for some kind of breakthrough in peace talks or at least a ceasefire for humanitarian relief seemed possible. But that did not happen when Russian and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov and Dmytro Kuleba faced one another across a large U-shaped table. That was the extent of the progress. No Breakthroughs Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey is encouraging the ongoing process taking place in Belarus. He e...

US, Venezuela Resume Diplomatic Talks

U.S Prisoners Held In Venezuela Return Home March 9, 2022--As the United States cuts off imports of oil from Russia, it opens doors for a resumption of trade with other countries under U.S. sanctions. Namely, it opens possibilities for Venezuela and Iran. In the latter case, Iran, negotiations have been ongoing in Vienna for months. Talks Resume In the case of Venezuela, diplomats restarted talks that had stalled. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed on Tuesday U.S. envoy had traveled to resume talks on "a range of topics" and those talks are ongoing. Venezuela backed Russia on a recent UN vote, abstaining from a resolution on by the UN Human Rights Council. And Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro stands firm in his commitment to his communist revolution. His Twitt...

UKRAINE: What Is The Budapest Memorandum, And Why It Matters.

March 9, 2022—Editor's Note: When searching for solutions when one country attacks another, it's helpful to look back in history and seek guidance from international agreements that are relevant. This article is the first in a series to help readers understand the background of Ukraine's security situation and international expectations. On January 11, 1994, Ukraine agreed to give up its vast nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees. Later that year, Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances with Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. At the time, Ukraine held 176 intercontinental missiles armed with some 1,240 nuclear warheads and 592 nuclear warheads aboard bombers. Following the agreement, Ukraine dismantled and destroyed the arsenal. Afte...

It is too soon to predict where this is heading. Even as Western leaders rule out the involvement of the NATO alliance, they and the rest of most of the world are carefully trodding towards confronting Vladimir Putin and the Russian government. Moral And Legal Support Mounts Moral support for Ukraine continues to grow, and an accumulation of legal and diplomatic is mounting. On March 4, the UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution condemni...
